What kind of President will be elected?
Romans 13:1
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. KJV
One may wonder; if God has ordained our leaders how then can we have cause to be disappointed in them? Would we not be happy with a leader appointed by God? How does political corruption and civil unrest occur under a leader placed by God? Notice Romans 13:1 does not state that the powers ordained by God will be a blessing unto the people. Why not?
A theme that is common throughout the Bible, God's instructions to us, is we reap what we sow. You could say we get what we deserve. Our Father rewards those that do His will with blessings and those that do their own will with calamity. Christ said "He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad." (Matthew 12:30). In the United States we have made it clear where we stand as a whole with the seperation of church and state. Yes I know there was a logic behind this choice. Government can't tell us how to worship and we won't have another church sanctioned inquisition. How has that been working for us? What Christian believes the inquistions where held by God's true church? As far a worshiping the way we want. We all know that is only allowed if it isn't in the public arena. When I was in elementry school we prayed in class and had the fear of God put in us by our teachers. In junior high I was among the students who walked out because prayer was banned. That's enough for now on that subject. I'll save the rest of it for another time but it was important for this discussion. The point for now is that to be blessed by God we have to be for Him. We must want and do His will.
God wants to rule us. He would rather not appoint a king or president. Moses led from Egypt to Moab where he died. Joshua brought the Jews into the promised land. Joshua and the elders then judged Israel. Through Joshua God ruled. After the death of Joshua God appointed Judah. Leadership of Israel went on in this fashion until the time of Samuel's sons. Samuel was established as a prophet by God. He was set to judge Israel. And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. (I Samuel 7:15). When Samuel became old his sons took his place. His sons did not walk as their father though. They were after money and took bribes. Of course the people were displeased. Instead of asking The Lord to take care of the problem they told Him, through Samuel, how.
I Samuel 8:3-7
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. 7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. KJV
God gave them a chance to repent.
I Samuel 8:8-10
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. 9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. 10 And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. KJV
Samuel told them their king would take everything including their sons and daughters from them. He told them they would be unhappy. They did not repent.
I Samuel 11-17
I Samuel 8:18,19
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day. 19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; KJV
God never meant for us to be led by kings or presidents. He wanted to lead us through men of His choosing. Priest and Prophets. The United States was founded by children of God. In trying to escape the problems suffered in Europe they over thought the solution. The problems they left were not caused by true men of God. A lesson was not learned from the Israelites when they chose to reject God in favor of a king. Now that we have presidents it is up to our nation as a whole what kind we get. Are for The Lord or against Him. If the nation is living apart from God then we will not be blessed.
To learn more about this transition of leadership read in your bibles the books of Joshua, I Samuel, and I Kings. It would not hurt to read From Joshua through II Chronicles.
May God bless us all.
