Because I said so
Our children want to know everything. Sometimes it seems they may drive us crazy with questions. Why is the sky blue? Where do babies come from? And the short, insistent, migraine inducing Why? We will try to answer all their questions. Because we love them and because we want them to have knowledge.
There are times we don't want to explain or we can't think of a way to explain so they will understand. We tell them to do or not to do something. "No. You can't have that." "No. You can't go to your friends right now." or maybe "It's time for bed." "Stop jumping on the bed." "Don't yell in the house." These commands, demands, or negatives are often countered with "Why?" or "Why not?"
At some time in our lives we have probably received the answer to those questions ourselves. We also probably thought to ourselves at the time we would never say it to our own kids. The infamous "Because I said so." We may have even had a cocky sense of satisfaction the first time we said it. This time we got to be the boss. I'm the parent you're the child and I said so.
Now lets have a show of hands from everyone that has said it. O.K. everyone that raised their hand keep that in mind for a bit. In truth we are all still children. Children of God. Now think hard. How many times have we come across a scripture we didn't understand. A commandment we couldn't quite agree with or even resisted. Many have done this. Looked at that commandment and thought "Why does it say that?" or "Why would God tell us that?". Like the child we may have even been defiant and disobeyed.
For all that raised a hand or had this resistance to God's commandments it's time for a little flashback to childhood. The next time it happens do this. Imagine God's parental voice sounding out from heaven and hear the words. BECAUSE I SAID SO!
