Computer Tips

Before you empty your junk mail

The good news

If you are a user of online, web based mail, such as Yahoo mail or Google's gmail then you probably like the bulk/junk mail features. This also applies to some local (on your computer) mail clients. Mail that appears to be spam/ junk mail goes to a folder separate from your inbox. This saves you the clutter of junk that you most likely didn't want to go through anyway. That's the good news.

The bad news

The bad news is this. Not everything that goes to this folder is junk. We often sign up for newsletters, join forums/message boards, or get a new email contact. You may have noticed that you don't always get a scheduled message from one or more of these contacts. That could be because the message wound up with the junk. I have noticed this myself. Boredom or curiosity got me to look in my bulk mail folder one night. It is a good thing I did. I found. Responses to post I had made on a few forums. Also I found newsletters and other email I was expecting in my inbox. The systems set up to filter the junk is good but not perfect. So it is a good Idea, especially after getting a new contact, to check your junk folders from time to time. That contact may not have forgotten about you. Their messages just might be in the wrong folder.

It is similar to sending a change of address to the postal service. If that is all you do to get your mail forwarded then chances are good that some mail will not make it to your new mailbox. It is a good idea in addition to the postal service change of address to send your new address to those you regularly correspond with yourself. We don't like getting bills but if the billers can't find us we could wind up with late charges. So sending your address to places you get bills from is a good idea.

What to do

When you send that address change out it is similar to something you can do with your email. Setting up filters. Filters tell the program what to do with the mail. You can indicate which folder you want it to go to. Below are a list of popular email clients (no particular order) and their instructions for setting up filters. I decided to do it this way to save space and lots of typing. :)
(Due to constant changes in these programs this list may not be up to date nor be concise.)

If you have any that should be added to this list send me an email. If possible send links that direct to the programs own site. email filter
