Notepad2 is a light-weight, free and open source Notepad-like text editor with syntax highlighting for a few commonly used languages. Syntax highlighting for HTML, XML, PHP, ASP (JS, VBS), CSS, JavaScript, VBScript, C/C++, C#, Resource Script, Makefiles, Java, Visual Basic, Pascal, Assembly, SQL, Perl, Python, Configuration Files, Apache Config Files, Batch Files, Diff Files. Other features include drag & drop text editing inside and outside Notepad2, search and replace, and Support for Unicode, UTF-8, Unix and Mac text files.

Create Webpages

This website may have started it's existance in Kompozer but it continues with Notepad2. When it came time to add images a problem of getting the images where they were wanted came up. Learning to fix the problem became confusing and time consuming. It turned out it would be quicker and simpler to use what is called CSS(Cascading style sheets) to place the images. A WYSIWYG(What You See Is What You Get) program like NVU/Kompozer is great for starting out in web design. You can see what is going on as it happens and of course you don't have to know how to code a webpage. The time learning how to get the program to do what was wanted was weighed against time learning HTML and CSS to code the pages by hand. Coding by hand was chosen. Now elements of the pages could be placed where they were wanted and styles mained from page to page.

What text editor to use ?

If you are a windows user then you probably have seen Notepad. This was tried at first. If you look at the Notepad-screenshot you can see that reading the code can get confusing. So a search was done for opensource text editors and Notepad2 was found. Compare this Notepad2-screenshot with the first and you can see why Notepad2 was chosen.

Of course there is more that can be done with this program. Use it just like Windows Notepad or, if you know how, code in the supported program languages. However you use it it will work great. To try Notepad2 for yourself go to http://www.flos-freeware.ch.
