Addiction

The main addiction

There are many things that people become addicted to. There is one thing many people never realize they are addicted to though. It is what, for some people, all their other addictions, if they have them, stem from. For others it is their only addiction. In many cases there are no substances involved. It is the main addiction. It is addiction to self.

Ask many people what is important to them and family will be at the top of the list. The problem is, that is when asked. Throughout their daily lives, however, their minds are usually on themselves. What do I want to eat. Where do I want to go. I don't like that.

Matthew 23:12 And whoever shall exalt himself, shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself, shall be exalted. Websters

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, KJV

This sense of self can often lead to selfishness. An addiction to self. Many of us base decisions on what makes us happy. The problem is what seems right for us may not be right for the family.

I want to spend this money on myself.
I want to stop at the bar after work.
I want to go with my friends after school instead of going home first.
I know I said I would spend more time with my family but my friends want me to hang out with them again and that's what I want.

Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. KJV

There are many ways we tend to put ourselves before family. This can be especially true when away from the family during our daily routines. We need to practice thinking of others. When you find yourself thinking of what you want stop and think how does this affect my family. How often do you think of your family first when faced with a decision?
