Marriage/Divorce

To love, honor, and WHAT?!

Page 1

I was watching one of those funny video shows one night and they did a segment on weddings. The reaction of one woman to a particular vow really fit this article. It started off nicely. The brides face a picture of happiness. The preacher read the common vows and she repeated as he went. The preacher said ...love, honor, and obey. The bride said ...love, honor, and WHAT?! It was if they were taking a blissful drive then suddenly hit a wall. It made for a funny moment. The wedding crowd laughed. The television audience laughed. People watching the show from home laughed. Though seemingly funny sadly it shows the blurred concept many have of marriage.

It seems a vast majority of couples see marriage as a sort of contest or challenge. Whoever grabs the reigns first gets to steer the cart. Can't you just feel the love in that attitude? It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Oh, wait. That fuzzy feeling was the same as the one I got when a cat decided to rub against my face and my mouth was open. Anyway. You know what I'm talking about. Many men think being a husband is being lord of the castle and ruling with an iron fist while many women see it as being queen of the castle and snapping a whip. No wonder the words macho and feminism are often said with the sound of distaste. Those attitudes do not make for a happy marriage. No surprise there.

God is teaching us something with marriage. We will see in the next page what that lesson is.
