David. A child chosen to be king!
God is the father and those who obey him are his children. He doesn't want us to wait until we get older. If we wait think about all that time that may be spent collecting bad habits. Let's look at someone who didn't wait. He had strong faith and while he was still young God called him to greatness. God had made a man Saul king over Israel. Saul had a Godly fear of the Lord and obeyed Him. Then power went to his head and decided to do his own will instead of God's. God chose someone else to take Saul's place but not right away. God sent his prophet Samuel to get the young man ready ahead of time.
I Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said to Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. Websters
David had many brothers. Jesse, David's father, had his older sons pass before Samuel the prophet. When Samuel saw David's brother Eliab he thought for sure that this was the one the Lord had chosen.
I Samuel 16:6 And it came to pass when they had come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him. 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the hight of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. I Samuel 16:10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and bring him: for we will not sit down till he hath come hither. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and also of a beautiful countenance, and a good appearance. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. Even though David was a good looking kid it was his heart that God loved.
Anointed:
To anoint is to put oil or perfume on someone or something. People anoint their skin with oil to keep it from becoming dry. There are other reasons for anointing. It was also used as a sign when God chose someone as a king, priest, or prophet.
